About this course

The creating safer and inclusive communities course has been developed for individuals, teams, workers, community leaders and managers. Our training will assist you to improve the quality of care and services you provide to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) consumers, staff and volunteers.

Course modules

Our course package delivers six key learning modules and takes approximately 6 hours to complete – this can be completed at the learners own pace. The course is  purchased through individual and group licence agreements. All licence agreements are for a 12 month period and can be renewed annually. The modules are a mix of educational resources, reading materials, videos, reflections and short reply surveys to accommodate a range of learning styles.  The modules are guided by the Victorian State Government’s Rainbow eQuality Principles and Standards Framework.

LGBTIQ+ Language, terminology, and cultural considerations

This module provides a broad overview of LGBTIQ+ language, the acronym and terminology. Participants will learn about the difference between sexual orientation and gender identities and be exposed to language that is used by different LGBTIQ+ people. This module explores LGBTIQ+ families, cultural considerations and experiences.

Understanding Privilege

This module provides the participants the opportunity to understand more about privilege. The module aims to increase knowledge around privilege and oppression, power structures, challenges and the benefits of understanding privilege, anti- oppressive frameworks and how to apply ally ship principles when working with LGBTIQ+ communities.

Exploring Intersectionality

This module provides the opportunity to understand more about intersectionality and incorporating an intersectional lens into everyday life. The module provides participants the opportunity to reflect on how to explore taking an intersectionality approach to further build on module 2 learning. Participants will gain an understanding around why an intersectional approach matters for LGBTIQ+ communities, issues, and holistic health needs.

LGBTIQ+ Research, Health Disparities and Exploring Equity Vs Equality

This module provides a broad overview of LGBTIQ+ research. It explains health disparities and the impact on LGBTIQ+ people’s wellbeing and lives. Participants will learn about the difference between equality and equity and improve understanding and confidence in comprehensively meeting the needs of LGBTIQ+ people.

LGBTIQ+ Communities and the law

This module provides a broad overview of LGBTIQ+ history and the impact of this on LGBTIQ+ people’s lives and legal freedoms, rights and needs. Participants will build an understanding and knowledge of anti-discrimination laws in Victoria. The module will refer to the Victorian Government and other legal agencies that describe legal obligations at an individual and organisational level.

Creating Safe and inclusive LGBTIQ+ Practice and Services

This module provides a broad overview of principles, strategies, and best practice for creating and making services LGBTIQ+ safe and inclusive. Participants will gain further understanding and knowledge of how to apply inclusive practice in their workplaces. This module provides tangible tools, information, and resources to embed inclusive practice on an individual and organisational level. The module explores how to create a safe and welcoming environments, services and organisations.

This training is intended to be broad to include all services, however, we will work with specialist organisations and provide webinars of specialist areas such as homelessness, alcohol and drugs, family violence and other specialised areas that relate to LGBTIQ+ communities. This will complement the elearning and can be added to the package through a webinar. Please contact us to discuss your needs and request a quote for this optional extra. 

We want our training to reach as many organisations as possible. Please contact us as we can arrange monthly payment plans and other offers for groups who may not have specific funding for this training.
